Program Information
The Indigenous Community & Society Board of Governors Certificate is designed to examine Aboriginal culture and history to provide a greater appreciation of the Aboriginal experience and to give context to current issues facing First Nations peoples. In this program, students understand important issues within Aboriginal communities and examine how culture plays a significant role. The legal status of Aboriginal People are explored along with Aboriginal rights, self-determination, land claims, justice and social services. Students also identify barriers to employment and strategies to assess a variety of special groups, including Aboriginal people. Topics such as the impact of the residential schools, effects of colonialism on traditional values and culture, as well as structural victimization through discussion and experiential learning from an Aboriginal perspective will be covered. This program will be of interest to social services, child and youth, and early childhood education professionals that work with Aboriginal clients and communities.
Credentials College-Approved Certificate
Residency
Students must complete a minimum number of credits in this program with their registering college to meet the Program Residency requirement to graduate from the program.
Completion
All courses must be completed within 7 years of acceptance into the program.
